PITCH SHIFTING

Part of the freq:res Research Framework – ongoing audiovisual collaboration platform (since 2019)

Pitch Shifting is an ongoing audiovisual collaboration between Sanja Star and Grgur Savić, developed through real-time interaction between sound, image, computational processes, and material actions. It is situated within the freq:res framework as a collaborative research strand.

The work investigates interaction as a communicative system in which sound and visual processes continuously influence each other through feedback, rhythm, and temporal modulation. Meaning emerges through immediate negotiation between sonic material, image-based structures, and computational behaviour.

Performances and installations unfold as live situations in which sound, image, material processes, and computation co-produce shifting audiovisual environments shaped by timing, interaction, and ongoing transformation.

Audiovisual Works (Video Works)

Holography Green’s Function is a time-based audiovisual work developed by Pitch Shifting (Grgur Savić / Sanja Star).

The piece explores the interaction between sound processing and algorithmic visual generation. Acoustic input and digital systems interact through structured feedback, producing abstract spatial formations that unfold over time. The work exists as an autonomous audiovisual composition intended for exhibition presentation and screening.

Hyksos Talks is a time-based audiovisual work by Pitch Shifting (Grgur Savić / Sanja Star).

The piece translates system-based sound processes and data flows into generative visual structures. Audio dynamics inform digital animation and compositional transformations, creating an evolving relationship between signal, frequency, and image. By foregrounding the noise and uncertainty inherent in communication, the work reflects on how data, time, and context shape perception. It operates as a self-contained audiovisual artwork designed for exhibition and screening contexts.

Live Works

UN:MATERIAL

UN:MATERIAL is a live audiovisual work by Pitch Shifting (Grgur Savić / Sanja Star).

The piece investigates close-range interactions between sound, material, and visual systems. It combines amplified tactile actions, micro-sonic gestures, and material contact with real-time sound processing and generative visual structures.

Acoustic signals emerge from proximity, pressure, and physical interaction rather than conventional instrumental technique. These signals are integrated into a responsive visual environment composed of algorithmic image sequences and projection-based spatial composition.

UN:MATERIAL operates as a structured audiovisual system in which material action, sonic transformation, and visual generation function as interdependent processes within exhibition contexts.

OUTBOX

OUTBOX is a time-based audiovisual work by Pitch Shifting (Grgur Savić / Sanja Star), developed within an art project supported by the Containerklang funding framework (kgnm).

The work unfolds in exhibition-oriented spatial contexts and explores real-time interaction between sound generation and generative visual systems. Through structured improvisation, feedback processes, and responsive audiovisual architectures, the piece develops as a dynamic environment shaped by temporal interaction.

OUTBOX operates as an experimental audiovisual work grounded in visual art practice and system-based research.

INFILTRATION

INFILTRATION is a live audiovisual work by Pitch Shifting (Grgur Savić / Sanja Star).

The piece explores intrusion, adaptation, and the shifting boundary between human gesture and machine behavior. Developed for near-dark environments, it establishes a spatial condition in which sound and image operate as interdependent systems.

Grgur Savić processes live saxophone input through MAX/MSP, transforming acoustic signals into mutable electronic textures that move between instrumental source and digital abstraction. These real-time transformations generate evolving sonic structures that function as input for the visual system.

In parallel, Sanja Star constructs a real-time visual environment composed of generative 3D structures, digital motion sequences, and audio-responsive image processes. The visuals unfold across projection surfaces, forming a distributed spatial field in which light operates as data and image functions as a dynamic system.

Seas of Mintaka

Seas of Mintaka is a time-based audiovisual work by Pitch Shifting (Grgur Savić / Sanja Star).

The work combines live saxophone performance and sound design with a visual system based on pre-rendered 3D animations that are deployed dynamically during presentation. The visual material is structured in modular sequences and distributed across multiple screen projections, allowing compositional reconfiguration in real time.

Sound and image interact through coordinated timing, modulation, and system-based editing. Acoustic input influences the deployment and transformation of visual sequences, forming a responsive audiovisual structure that unfolds within exhibition contexts.
